United States Government Shutdown

Just hours before the existing funding for multiple government departments was about to expire, the United States Senate narrowly avoided a partial government shutdown on Friday.

The programs’ funding was set to expire at midnight. A contentious, months-long dispute over government spending that briefly left the Republican-controlled House of Representatives without a leader is partially resolved by the vote.

Prior to the vote, Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer stated, “To those who worry that divided government means nothing ever gets done, this bipartisan package says otherwise.”

Why the Funding was on Hold?

Earlier this week, the plan sailed with ease through the United States Republican-controlled House of Representatives. However, because some conservative Republicans insisted on holding votes on immigration and other issues, the Senate’s business was put on hold. Every one of them was unsuccessful.

A much broader package of budget legislation of United States that address the military, homeland security, health care, and other services still need to be negotiated by Congress. The programs’ funding is set to expire on March 22.

The Combined Cost of the Packages.

The combined cost of the two packages is $1.66 trillion. Republicans on the far right had advocated for more budget cutbacks for United States in order to reduce the $34.5 trillion national debt.

It was intended that all of these measures would have been law by October 1st, the beginning of the fiscal year 2024. United States Congress seldom meets that deadline, but this year’s discussion has been particularly disorganized. Thus far, Congress has been required to approve four measures for temporary funding in order to maintain agency operations at the same level as the prior year.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat, asked for $241.3 million in earmarks, or local projects funded by specific members, to be included in the spending legislation. Two days prior to the commencement of the fiscal year, on September 29, 2023, she passed away.
